Meet Hon. Agho Oliver Bamenju

Hon. Agho Oliver Bamenju, one of Cameroon’s youngest Members of Parliament, is proving that age is no barrier to impactful leadership. Representing the Bafut-Tubah constituency in the North West Region, Agho has emerged as a formidable voice in the National Assembly, advocating for justice, human rights, and the empowerment of marginalized communities.

Hailing from Tubah Sub Division, Agho’s political journey began shortly after graduating high school. His appointment as chairperson of a local polling center during the 2007 twin municipal and legislative elections showcased his early dedication to transparency and good governance. The public’s positive response to his management of the elections laid the groundwork for a career built on integrity and service. “The trust of my community has been my greatest motivation,” Agho reflects, highlighting the importance of earning the electorate’s confidence.

Before stepping into the political arena, Agho was a prominent advocate against violence towards women, becoming the first young man in his region to join The Mr. Bamenda Organization. His involvement with the Bamenda Human Rights Film Festival further solidified his devotion to social justice. Between 2011 and 2016, he served as the Regional Secretary General for the Citizen’s Association for Defense of Collective Interests (ACDIC), where he tackled corruption and championed local farmers affected by market fluctuations. “Standing up for the oppressed has always been my calling,” he asserts, emphasizing his dedication to advocating for those without a voice.

In 2020, Agho was elected to the National Assembly, where he has actively fought against child labor and trafficking, issues that plague many communities in Cameroon. His passion for human rights is matched by his hands-on approach to development. Agho has donated over 2,000 roofing sheets to displaced families, secured scholarships for vulnerable children, and provided medical equipment to local hospitals. His commitment to public service is deeply rooted in his understanding of the challenges faced by his constituents.

Agho’s recent election as the 2nd Vice President of the African Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD) marks a significant achievement for both him and Cameroon. This forum, held in Uganda, gathers leaders and experts to discuss sustainable development across Africa. Agho’s participation underscores his role in promoting good governance and accountability, critical components for achieving lasting change. “We must work together to ensure that every voice is heard in our development processes,” he stated, reaffirming his belief in inclusive decision-making.

His presence at the ARFSD is not just a personal milestone; it represents a broader recognition of the role young leaders play in shaping Africa’s future. As Agho engages with fellow parliamentarians from across the continent, he emphasizes the need to address pressing issues such as economic development and environmental sustainability. “The youth are the backbone of our nations, and their involvement in governance is crucial for progress,” he asserts.

Agho’s recent initiatives demonstrate a profound commitment to community cohesion and cultural preservation. During the 53rd National Day celebrations, he marched alongside constituents in Bafut, a region often overshadowed by conflict. His decision to participate in this symbolic event challenged the narratives of fear and division that have long plagued the area. “We cannot allow our challenges to define us. We must stand together for unity and peace,” he declared, reinforcing his dedication to fostering a sense of belonging among his people.

Just days after the National Day, Agho launched a campaign to establish a Bafut Cultural Center in Bamenda, donating one million francs CFA towards its construction. This center aims to serve as a hub for cultural preservation and community organization. “As your MP, I am pledging to be an ambassador for this cause,” he stated, calling on all Bafut sons and daughters to join him in this important endeavor. The initiative not only addresses the community’s need for a gathering space but also seeks to revitalize the rich cultural heritage of the Bafut people.

His proactive approach to rebuilding lives in conflict-affected communities highlights Agho’s belief in the power of grassroots initiatives. He has provided support to the most vulnerable, including the elderly, orphans, and persons with disabilities. “Every effort counts, no matter how small,” he emphasizes. A comment which displays his approach to inclusive development.

Knight Merit

Recognition of Agho’s efforts came when he was awarded the title of “Knight of the Cameroon Order of Merit” by President Paul Biya. This accolade acknowledges his hard work and dedication to the nation. “I am sincerely grateful for this recognition and the opportunities it brings,” he expressed, dedicating the honor to the youth of his region, particularly those affected by ongoing crises.
