“The methods (intimidation and gagging) we are witnessing this Pentecost Sunday from the Cameroonian authorities in Yaoundé and Douala are unworthy. They must be denounced by all republicans. These methods are reminiscent of bygone eras we’d rather forget. Moreover, they radicalize those for whom demonstrating, shouting, and singing in praise of their champion is the only form of expression for a frustration that is largely understandable, given the country’s dire state. What’s most exasperating is seeing how our authorities fail to learn from the past. This unyielding obstinacy has already proven disastrous elsewhere and in our own country.
“Today, it would take just a small spark for things to escalate, with no one knowing where it would end. Despite knowing the security forces are present, the protesters have mustered the courage to express themselves, no matter what. This is a message that can’t be met indefinitely with condescension, outbursts, exhortations, and threats.
“It’s time the authorities understood that the era of obscure dictatorships is long gone. There’s no prohibition on showing a bit of intelligence in defending public order or expressing devotion to the system in place. The Republic is about taking into account the feelings of others. The Republic is for everyone. Let people move freely. Let people express themselves freely!!!”
